Around the Bay 2011 – Race Report

Today was the Around the Bay 30km race.  I spent a lot of this morning what the hell to wear.  The Weather Network was claiming temps of potentially –17 to –10 with the wind chill … but it honestly didn’t feel like that to me.  I went through 2 wardrobe changes and settled on what I thought was a good comprise and honestly thought I might still be chilly..

I was wrong.

I lost my gloves within 5 min of running and sweated my way through the a lot of the race. Less is better Laura…less is better….No one needs that much dried salt on their face from sweat when they run.

The awesome hubs and my extended family was on the Beach strip for some cheering:

At this point (14-17km) I was actually right on track with what I had hoped to do which was average 7min/km.  Looking back for me this was to aggressive for a longer race…and I paid for it.

The hubs and a friend were awesome enough to catch me around the 23km mark:

The finish was a 2+ min PB over last year (not the 4 I originally thought..) and I wasn’t real pleased as the hubs captured on camera:

After really thinking about it, I was ok with the run today.  It was the first race where I completely paced myself – everyone else was running their own race so I have to rely on ‘me’ to keep going.  The pace for the first 22km were good but overall too fast for me.  The next 4 weeks before the marathon involved long runs of 29-35km so I will be concentrated on starting slower and keeping the pace.  A plan is set….

Some great aspects of the race today:

- the Sun!  Out for the entire race and NO SNOW!

-the Spectators – this was the most amount of people I have ever seen out cheering and it was great to see.   At the church on Plains Road, the choir was out cheering in their choral robes – awesome.

-the volunteers, police etc – they make a race so THANK YOU.

-all of the runners who participated..you.are.wicked.  Congrats to everyone who raced this great course.

- the hubs and my run group.  I love them.

Post race there was coffee, ice bath and a burger.   But I hurt… a lot right now. A white Russian cocktail should fix that or knock me the hell out…

You still got a good pb so imo that's still a great race even if you did set off a little fast!

ATB is such a tough and unforgiving course. Its hard to hold back but if you dont those hills in the last 3rd of the race tend to grow much bigger and harder.

Great race congrats on the PB

I think you did great...a PB is fantastic regardless of by how much. Especially if you were uncomfortable/overdressed.... Way to go Laura! Every race teaches us something it seems.

Congrats on the PB! It's so hard to figure out what combination of clothing works, especially when the wind chill is a factor. I hope you recover quickly! It sounds like you have a good plan for the next few weeks of training.

I was sweating through my clothes too, even after ditching a layer last minute! Beauty day.

Congrats on gutting it out by yourself for a PB!
