Feeling Sorry for the 4hr Pace Bunny and Dead Soldiers

Sunday capped off a great training week for me.  I felt strong on all my workouts and was happy on the nutrition front.  The only thing that is lagged behind is sleep.  I used to love sleep.  I joked that if there was a cult where sleep was involved, I’d join it.  Now…I am beginning to dread it.  I wake up at all hrs, I fall asleep just wishing it was morning etc.  I don’t feel tired necessarily just irritated. (more than usual)….

Yesterday was our first really cold run:  -12 with the windchill (~14F).  The sun made an appearance so it wasn’t bad.  I am still in the slowwwwwww pace for my long runs and end up running solo as no one else is running my pace.  I thus have lot o’ time to think/dream about various things.  Sunday was no exception:

  • -why are my hands so cold?
  • -why the hell are there people out on their bikes?  It is freezing!
  • do ducks ever get cold?
  • -Why don’t some people acknowledge the ‘runner’s wave’?
  • -you know who I feel sorry for?  The 4hr marathon pace bunny….you spend the whole race pacing people to 4hrs and they all ditch you at the end to get in under 4 hrs.

….and so on.  The voices in my head make great company.  Because I am out for so long, I am having to re-think my fuel a bit more as well.  Sunday’s 13km run involved my latest brekfast obsession- Nature’s Past GF Cereal:

CER-EB-SU-CrunchyMaple-US-Compare

and Vega’s line including the PreWorkout energizer, electrolyte replacer and gels.  In my previous unhealthy life, dead soldiers meant the empty beer bottles found post party…now it looks like this:

deadsoldiers

Yes…2 full gels in a 13km run.  At the pace I run, I could have an entire meal and still be fine.  If someone brought me a coffee during my run, I could drink it.

…and would…

Do you get enough sleep?  If you’ve struggle with it, how did you ‘overcome’ it?

I usually get enough sleep. I hit the sheets anywhere from 8:30 to 10:30 during the week depending on what is going on that night and the next morning... I try to average 8 hours and feel best when I do. I do NOT function well on little sleep. I still feel like a basket case from getting just a few hours on Saturday night.

Nice job on the long run! It sure was cold, but I loved the sun!

You would have read on my 21 random list I only sleep 4.5 hours a night on average. I just can't sleep more and don't try. When I'm really tired I can sometimes sleep 6 hours. I don't know cold like that. Johannesburg just doesn't get that cold.

I need A LOT of sleep or else I am a crazy biatch to everyone. I guess it doesn't matter now as I work from home!? :)

Great work on the run this weekend! I have to get my running mojo back! I haven't felt like running since Vegas and it doesn't help that I have some pain in my heel and right leg. Reading your post makes me want to go out now :)

I have no trouble falling asleep, but usually after 2 to 3 hrs. I usually just get up and go to our spare bedroom. I get very fustrated some times. I normally get up at 4 am to go workout so it makes fora very short night. By 3 nights of this I am feeling exhausted and will usually fall asleep and not wake up. It is a visious cycle.

I definitely don't get as much sleep as I would like. I used to be able to sleep until 11am no problem but now my body wakes up at the crack of dawn! I need to make an effort to hit the sack way earlier.

I am loving Vega's new line. Those gels are awesome. Congrats on the long run. You are a warrior for taking it out there in the cold! These Canadian winters aren't the greatest for outdoor running!!

I was always a sound sleeper before I had a baby, now I wake up several times a night (even though she's way past that stage). I have caved and used things like melatonin or valerian root (herbal) when I really need a good nights sleep.

I LOVE sleep, but I also love time w/ my husband and my books and computer AFTER my kids are asleep, so I don't get as much as I know I need, which is a lot (like nine hours a night).

I get a lot of sleep, and actually, it's about my bed time right now :o
But I've never thought of that and the 4 hour pace bunny, mostly because it would be the day pigs fly that I finished anywhere near 4 hours.

I'm saving my Vega gels for marathon training! So far, I really like the products!

Your random thoughts are cracking me up!

I don't get as much sleep as I like. I go to bed between 9 and 9:30 pm but don't fall asleep until around 10 pm. Then, I typically wake up between 4 and 4:30 am to run. I guess 6 hours is enough, but I want more!

I definitely don't get enough sleep or enough rest for that matter. I am up at 4:50 to get myself/daughter ready for the day...get home at 6:00 and have daughter in bed by 7:30, then onto the treadmill usually around 8:00 (which sucks). In bed by 10 and up again at 4:50....definitely not enough sleep.

I am the worst sleeper ever, have been since I was a kid, I've resigned myself to it at this point.
