1. Sunday’s –20ish run changed to the plus temps for Tuesday’s speed work run. Mama Nature wouldn’t allow us to let our guard down so she added gale force winds into the mix. I lost my hat 3 times on the run and was at one point literally standing still when I was trying to run. Luckily…I did find this funny. (probably because I was on the cool down part of the run)
2. Last night was our first night of hills…and with it came more plunging temps, snow and yes…more wind. Our hill repeats are an ~ 2.7km out and back involving 2 ups/downs. One side was totally clear, the other snow covered and windy. We killed the 3 repeats though. Take that Around the Bay route!
3. Post run, I stuck around to help spot the rest of our group that came out to do repeats as it is pretty dark along the route. (it is virtually closed to traffic so no plowing and little in the way of street lights) When you aren’t running…the cold was brutal. I had on a hat, ear warmers, 2 sets of gloves, 2 thermal tops, jacket, tights, jeans, socks and boots and Hot Shots in various places on my person. And.was.still.cold. The best part was trying to change into all of the above in the tiny stall of the local Tim Hortons. You had to be Nadia Comaneci to get it done.
4. I did try to get some pics but my fingers were prohibited by the cold and my many layers of gloves. I did snap this beauty when I got home:
C’mon…you want to be my friend… you know you do.
Do you hill train? If so…how? (short repeats? gradual inclines?)

I run on hills all the time because we live at the base of the Blue Mtns. There is nothing like conquering a hill. Although, I've never done actual speed work on them.
Our weather is WACKY. Ice, then snow, and now more ice. You don't even break through the top layer. Not going to venture out in my yaks because I worry more about the drivers.
You are a tough cookie! And I happen to like your hat!
Most of my hill training is spent on long hills. Running from my neighbourhood to the top of Mt Royal is a loooong gradual hill (with a few plateaus for rest).
Sometimes I'll mix it up and do short hill repeats or just incorporate a shorter hill or two into my shorter runs.
The weather here hasn't quite been as crazy as yours- but apparently we're supposed to get rain at some point next week, which is definitely weird!
how could you actually move with all those layers on? hahahah
when i'm able to run, i do hill train. usually something like 8-12 x 1-2 minutes HARD uphill, walk back down. with a 15 min warm up before and cool down after.
I'd much rather do repeats for time (1min on/2 off) up a mother hill than have to do the same hill up to 10 times. :) Thankfully my clinic leader is very open to doing this even though it's at the RR and varies from the actual plan.
We don't have snow! Most places it is bare ground!
Love the hat but I have to admit I don't miss training in the cold :) I've been spinning but need to run again, I miss it!
I admire your determination. It doesn't snow here, but if the weather is bad there is a 99% chance I'm skipping the workout.
You guys are absolute warriors out there! Running in those conditions and fighting it is making you TOUGH!
i need to hill train... but usually cop out and claim that since my routes are fairly up/down hilly that's sufficient for me.
ps: i tagged you! http://www.chasingthekenyans.com/2012/01/33-randoms.html
tagged you! check out my blog!
I've been doing some hill repeats for the first time this session ... we do long and "gradual" although it doesn't feel gradual! I think I'm going to alternate tempo runs with hill repeats on a week by week basis.
Nice running and cute hat!
