The Laundry of a Cold Long Run

Yesterday’s long run was cold.  Not chilly, not brisk, not nippy but F’ing COLD.  With the wind chill it was –20C or –4F .  There’s no way I was going to run 20km on the treadmill and it was supposed to be a sunny day so deal with it hearty Canadian.

I dressed for the full wind chill as we were running near the lake and it was a good thing I did.  While I wasn’t freezing, I also didn’t want to pull layers off so I knew I was dressed appropriately.

Post run laundry:

laundry

in the layering was:

  • 2 pairs of gloves.  Of late my hands have been really cold so 2 layers it was and I was fine
  • 1 base layer on the bottom and my Sugoi Firewall run tights
  • 3 layers on the top:  base warm layer, hooded top and my old trusty Adidas run jacket that rocks as it has a million pockets for my gel, phone, music and the billion kleenex I carried for my nose that ran faster than me.
  • Neck warmer and hat.  My neck warmer is a love/hate thing.  I use it to try to keep my face warm but can’t run with it over my mouth as I can’t breathe.  Hmmm…

Look like a lot of clothing?  Yes…it was.  It was a Stay Puft Marshmallow kind of run but it ended up being a good one.  My coach came out to meet me about 8km into the run and we did some tempo pick ups.  It was hard to get the legs moving but felt awesome.  I am thankful to have both my friend as company and the pick ups to change the run up a bit as it was really tough to get into a groove.  I could not slow down which you might think isn’t a bad thing but I have to keep my training at the right zones.  It’s a marathon after all, not a sprint.

Did you run in the cold this weekend?  How many layers did you have?

Way to brave the elements! Do you love your Firewall tights? I have the Firewall jacket and it is the bomb! Yes I was out yesterday in a balmy 18 but the WC was single digits. Not nearly as cold as you!

Good stuff! You are tough. I had cold runs too, but that's relative. It was around 28 or so both days when I set out, with a bit of windchill. So my pile was not close to yours!

LOL, yup, looks like the load of clothes I peeled off yesterday before standing under hot water until hubs starting banging on the door.

Awesome job getting 'er done! And now it's getting warm again. What the eff?

I ran, but it was only -5ish. I do not miss the Ontario winters! Nice work!

Looks like my piles of clothes! I love winter running because you can always add layers and you never really overheat. It was 4 degrees here the other morning and sometimes it's really hard convincing myself to get out there. I bought a pair of snowboarding mittens last year and they are SO warm. I can only wear them when it's 10 degrees F or under or else my hands get too warm. Just a thought!

I ran this weekend, but it was nowhere near as cold as your run... about 35-40F. I wear two layers on top, and just a pair of long pants on bottom. They're workout pants that have a slight flare and not running tights, so I tried adding in my calf sleeves for one of my runs and they worked to keep my legs warmer but not too hot.

I didn't get out there this weekend but would have as I still prefer the deep cold to the dreadmill. Nicely run!

Well, I THOUGHT it was cold at 28* but compared to you...NOPE! Although it took a long time to warm up after!
I think winter has finally arrived.

I'm yet to experience the crazy marshmallow layering, it's been stupid warm here for this time of year. I did buy a nice winter run coat this morning, I almost didn't buy it because it's been so warm!
But two gloves? Interesting, and scary. Glad you had a good run!

Luckily for me, the good weather held out on Saturday for my 36k long run. However, yesterday's run club was in -23C (before the windchill) and right now it's -26C with a -36C windchill. It'll be interesting to see how many hearty (read: crazy) Canadians show up for the 5k clinic tonight!

1 layer on bottom - (good pants)
One glove
Three tops
two on head.

It was so so so so so cold!

winter running certainly takes a ton more laundry for sure!

You are one brave lady! I have run up to 21 miles on the treadmill...have no problems with it if I can find a good movie to distract me :).

I had 4 layers on top because I put a tank top under my shirts :)

I find a thin "fashion scarf" works quite well instead of a neck warmer and it is easier to breathe through. It CAN freeze up a little because of the hot air you breathe into it, but you can always stop and re-wrap it.

Hid in my basement with some frosties instead of running. Will try to tackle a few miles tonight as it has warmed substantially....carry on!!!

Wow -- I have never ran with that much clothing on. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to move! Lol-- but good for you for getting out there and braving the snow! It's funny because this is the first year I have not had a real winter, no snow, and no real weather under 50 degrees and I kind of miss it. There is something so amazing about running in the snow.
